It was one of those summers that come once in your life,
A summer you'll always remember,
When the air was sweet with just mowed grass,
And flowers their blooms bright and tender.
It was one of those summers to lie in a hamock,
And gently be rocked by a breez,
While catfish jumpped in a stream nearby,
And birds sang sweet in the trees.
It was one of those summers when you would wake up,
And the sun would be bright in the sky,
When corn was tall, and melons were ripe,
And cotton was growing so high.
It was one of those summers when you sat in a swing,
Protected by pine and oak shade,
You thought of the dance, of a blooming romance,
And sipped on pink lemonade,
It was one of those summers when innocence fell,
Round your shoulders like some satin gown,
And the world was a place to explore and run in,
And troubles were nowhere around.
It was one of those summers you'll never forget,
That no one knows nothing about,
And you dream of it when you lie down at night,
And the memories you can't live without,
And deep in the recesses of your thoughts
It lingers as yesterday's wine,
The summer you spent between youth and now,
The summer you can't leave behind.
I wrote this poem today. Guess I'm in a reflective mood.
It's a very nice poem. makes me nostalgic
Thanks for posting this.
Makes me wish I'd grown up in the country.
These lines reminded me of a summer I spent not very long ago in Kansas. Precious memories...
